Short answer
You can deduct expenses that are ordinary and necessary for your business: common in your industry and helpful for earning income. The most frequent ones are the business use of your car (72.5 cents per mile in 2026 with the standard rate), a home office used regularly and only for work, the business part of your phone and internet, and 50% of business meals. Personal expenses, entertainment and fines are not deductible.

An expense is deductible when it is ordinary in your type of business, necessary to run it and not personal. If it is partly business and partly personal, you deduct only the business part. And every deduction needs a record: a receipt, an invoice or a bank statement, plus a note of the business purpose when it is not obvious.
The car
You can choose between two methods:
- Standard mileage rate: for 2026 it is 72.5 cents per business mile. You multiply your business miles by that rate.
- Actual expenses: the business percentage of gas, insurance, repairs, depreciation and similar costs.
Either way, keep a mileage log with the date, the place and the purpose of each trip. Driving from home to a regular workplace is commuting, and commuting is not deductible.
The home office
If you use part of your home regularly and exclusively for the business, you can deduct it. The simplest way is the simplified method: $5 per square foot, up to 300 square feet, for a maximum of $1,500 a year. The regular method uses the actual percentage of rent or mortgage interest, utilities and insurance, and can be larger, but it needs more records. A dining table that the family also uses does not qualify.
Phone and internet
Deduct the percentage you use for the business. If you have a line or a plan only for the business, it is fully deductible.
Meals and entertainment
- Business meals with clients, or while traveling for work, are generally 50% deductible. Note who you were with and what business you discussed.
- Entertainment, such as concerts, games or golf, is not deductible, even with a client.
Other common deductions
- Software, subscriptions and office supplies.
- Professional services: accounting, legal and tax preparation for the business.
- Advertising, website and business cards.
- Business insurance and bank fees.
- Equipment and computers, which in 2026 can generally be deducted in full in the first year; see our year-end planning guide.
What is never deductible
- Personal and family expenses, even if you pay them from the business account.
- IRS and traffic fines and penalties.
- Political contributions.
- The owner's own federal income tax.

Respuesta corta

Book your free consultationAgenda tu consulta gratisLa regla general
- Aportes a campañas políticas.
