Quarterly estimated taxes: who pays, when and how muchPagos estimados trimestrales: quién paga, cuándo y cuánto

If you are self-employed or own a business, nobody withholds tax for you. Estimated payments avoid a large bill in April and the underpayment penalty.

Short answer

Individuals generally must make quarterly estimated payments if they expect to owe $1,000 or more for the year after withholding and credits. The due dates are April 15, June 15, September 15 and January 15 of the following year, moved to the next business day when they fall on a weekend or holiday.

How much to pay: the safe harbor

You avoid the underpayment penalty if your withholding and estimated payments, paid on time, cover at least:

  • 90% of this year's tax, or
  • 100% of last year's tax, or 110% if last year's adjusted gross income was above $150,000 ($75,000 if married filing separately).

Paying based on last year's tax is the simplest option when income is growing: you know the number from the start. If your income is seasonal, the annualized income method can lower the earlier payments.

Business owners

  • Single-member LLCs and partners pay estimates personally on the business profit, including self-employment tax.
  • S-Corp owners can increase the tax withheld from their salary instead of making separate payments. Withholding is generally treated as paid evenly during the year, which can help if you are behind.
  • C-Corps make their own estimated payments if they expect to owe $500 or more, due on the 15th day of the 4th, 6th, 9th and 12th months of their tax year.

How to pay

Through IRS Direct Pay, the Electronic Federal Tax Payment System (EFTPS) or your IRS Online Account. Keep the confirmation of each payment and note it for your return.

What happens if you miss a payment

The penalty works like interest on the amount that was short, for the time it was late, calculated quarter by quarter. Paying late is better than not paying: the penalty stops growing from the date you pay.

Respuesta corta

Qué pasa si no pagas a tiempo
