Retirement accounts for business owners: SEP IRA or Solo 401(k), and which one saves you moreCuentas de retiro para dueños de negocio: SEP IRA o Solo 401(k), y cuál te ahorra más

A retirement plan is one of the few deductions that also builds your own savings. For a business without employees, the choice is usually between a SEP IRA and a Solo 401(k).Un plan de retiro es una de las pocas deducciones que además construye tus propios ahorros.

Short answer

Both plans let a business owner deduct contributions up to $72,000 for 2026. The SEP IRA is the simplest: the business contributes up to 25% of compensation (for a self-employed person, effectively about 20% of net self-employment earnings). The Solo 401(k) adds employee deferrals of up to $24,500, plus catch-up contributions if you are 50 or older, so at small and medium incomes it usually allows you to save more.

SEP IRA

  • Who contributes: only the employer, meaning your business.
  • How much: up to 25% of compensation, with a maximum of $72,000 for 2026. For a self-employed owner, the calculation reduces it to about 20% of net self-employment earnings.
  • Deadline: you can open it and contribute up to the due date of your return, including extensions. It works even after the year ends.
  • Employees: if you hire eligible employees, you must contribute the same percentage for them.
  • Paperwork: minimal; there is no annual plan return.

Solo 401(k)

  • Who contributes: you, twice. As an "employee", you defer up to $24,500 in 2026 (up to 100% of earned income). As the "employer", the business adds a profit-sharing contribution calculated like the SEP.
  • Catch-up: if you are 50 or older, $8,000 more in 2026; between ages 60 and 63, $11,250 instead.
  • Total limit: $72,000 for 2026, not counting catch-up contributions.
  • Roth option: many plans allow Roth deferrals, which do not lower today's tax but grow tax-free.
  • Only for businesses without employees other than the owner and their spouse.
  • Paperwork: Form 5500-EZ once plan assets reach $250,000 at year-end.

A simple comparison

With a modest profit, the Solo 401(k) usually wins, because the $24,500 employee deferral does not depend on a percentage of profit. With a very high profit, both can reach the same $72,000 maximum, and the SEP is easier to manage. If you have an S-Corp, the calculations use your W-2 salary, not the total profit, which is one more reason to set that salary carefully.

Deadlines matter

The SEP can be opened and funded up to the extended due date of the return. A Solo 401(k) has stricter rules for when it must exist and when you must elect the employee deferral, and they depend on whether it is the plan's first year. The safe option is to open it before December 31 if you want to contribute for this year.

Respuesta corta
