Short answer
An ITIN (Individual Taxpayer Identification Number) is a nine-digit number that starts with 9. The IRS issues it to people who need a U.S. tax ID but are not eligible for a Social Security number. You apply with Form W-7, usually attached to your federal tax return. It is for tax purposes only: it does not authorize work, change immigration status or give Social Security benefits.

- Nonresidents who must file a U.S. return, for example to report rental income or the sale of U.S. property.
- Foreign owners of U.S. companies who need to file Form 1040-NR or claim a tax treaty benefit.
- A spouse or dependents who are included on a U.S. return and cannot get a Social Security number.
Documents
You must prove your identity and your foreign status. A valid passport is the only document that proves both on its own. Without a passport, you need a combination of other documents, such as a national ID card and a birth certificate. The IRS accepts only originals or copies certified by the agency that issued them.
Three ways to apply
- By mail to the IRS ITIN unit, with your return and original or certified documents. The IRS returns the documents, but you are without your passport while it is processed.
- In person at an IRS Taxpayer Assistance Center that verifies documents, by appointment.
- Through a Certifying Acceptance Agent, who can verify your passport and send the application without you mailing the original.
How long it takes
The IRS generally indicates about 7 weeks, and 9 to 11 weeks during tax season (January to April) or when the application comes from abroad. Apply well before you need to file.
When an ITIN expires
An ITIN expires if it is not used on a federal tax return for three consecutive years. It expires on December 31 of the third year. To renew it, file Form W-7 again and mark the renewal option; a renewal does not need to be attached to a tax return. If you file with an expired ITIN, the return is processed, but some credits can be delayed or denied until the ITIN is renewed.
Common mistakes that delay it
- Choosing the wrong reason for applying on Form W-7.
- Sending simple photocopies instead of originals or certified copies.
- Applying without the tax return when no exception applies.
- Names that do not match exactly between the passport and the form.
Respuesta corta

Book your free consultationAgenda tu consulta gratisQuién lo necesita
