Short answer
For payments made in 2026, a business generally files Form 1099-NEC or 1099-MISC only when it pays a person $2,000 or more in the year, up from $600. Starting with 2027 payments, the amount is adjusted for inflation. Separately, payment platforms file Form 1099-K only above $20,000 and more than 200 transactions.

Book your free consultationAgenda tu consulta gratisIf you pay contractors
- Keep collecting Form W-9 before the first payment, even if you think you will stay under $2,000.
- Track payments by vendor in your books; the threshold is per payee for the whole year.
- Backup withholding also follows the $2,000 threshold: if a payee reaches it and has not given a valid tax ID, you must withhold.
- Forms for 2026 payments are due to recipients and to the IRS by February 1, 2027. If you file 10 or more information returns in total, you must file electronically.
- Payments made in 2025 follow the old $600 rule, even when filed in 2026.
If you are paid as a contractor or sell online
- You may receive fewer 1099s. That does not change anything about what you owe: all income is taxable, with or without a form.
- Payment card transactions still produce a 1099-K regardless of the amount.
- Some states have lower 1099-K thresholds, so you may receive a state form anyway.
- Your own bookkeeping, not the 1099s, is what supports your return if the IRS asks.
Why it matters
Fewer forms means less paperwork for small businesses, but also fewer third-party records. When the IRS compares returns with fewer 1099s, clean books become your main protection.
Respuesta corta

Book your free consultationAgenda tu consulta gratisSi pagas a contratistas
